Jonny McConkey Interview & Edit

I haven't seen Jonny 'Bonkers' McConkey since he was home in Belfast for a few days in December last year. It was great to catch up with him over email for this interview and to see the edit that Wireless Skateboards main dude, Ryan O'Neile, put together for it.
Read on and get a (small, non-traditional) taste of France with us from Bonkers and check out his new edit.

Lets start this gently, how long have you been out in France now?
I've been out here for nearly 8 months now, since September 2012 and I have no idea when I'm gonna be back again. I spent the first 3 months couch surfing at Alex Richard's house, and I owe alot to him and his mum for helping me get set up out here, without them I'd probably already be back in our wee country. Cheers!

What are you doing out there apart from skating?
I work full time at the Connemara Irish pub, mostly in the kitchen. That takes up a lot of my time but I really enjoy it. Apart from that I just kick it with my mates, play call of duty (shout out to Shlagui!), cook mad unhealthy food and frequent some fine drinking establishments. C'est la vie.
How do the spots in Bordeaux compare to Belfast?
Here, there are much more "plaza" esque spots than at home, which is dope. And there's so many wee spots, you find something new all the time, but I still miss the rough spots back home. Some days I just wanna get a flight home and skate Custom House Square. I know it's shit, but I grew up there, that's where I met all my friends. Still got mad love for the spots in Belfast.

You have to be honest, where has the best food?
the best food is wherever I am. everyone knows that when they come to my house, theyre gonna eat well. for me, cooking is like skating, you can be creative, you do whatever you want.

We're releasing a new edit with this interview - who are you skating with in Bordeaux? The footage from the interview was from 2 weeks skating with Alex and Guillaume Martinez, in Bordeaux and Lyon. We car shared between Bordeaux, Lyon, Annecy, Grenoble and Geneva. It was pretty crazy, on the way to Lyon we were in a van with 2 strangers, towing the car from the movie "Bad Boys" behind us the whole way.
Do you plan on travelling more?
I'm gonna be travelling alot more, i'm saving up some money now to try to go to a few places this year. I can go to most places by train pretty easily so I plan on couchsurfing round Europe a bit, hook up with some friends.

You filmed some of it with the Wireless guys on their recent trip to France, how was it skating with the old crew again?
Skating with the boys here was sick, especially havin' Niall Creaney out because it had been ages since I'd seen him. As well as Meatball we had Beagles B, Pinky, Hippy, Mini, Big Stu and Fogo, who's actually livin' in Paris right now. I'd been working alot beforehand so to have a week off with all my good friends doing nothin but skating, eating well and watching fail montages was perfect. CANNON!

What's the coffee like out in France?
I'm more of a tea man now days, gettin all types of flavoured shit, it's the bomb.

I remember you talking about golf when you were still living in Belfast, have you carried that on in France? What is it that attracts you to a sport so different to skateboarding?

I haven't been able to play any golf here, it's not a big thing in France really. I was always into it because of my Dad, I remember when I was younger we would go to the driving range all the time and just play for hours, before skateboarding ruined my life haha.
I've been watching football alot more recently, trying to play some too. Down on the quay there's loads of grass and open space so it's sick to just grab a ball and a few beers, skate down there and just kick it.

Cheers Bonkers - hope to see you soon mate!

RIP Lewis Marnell

This past Saturday, January 19th, we heard of the sad, untimely passing of professional skateboarder Lewis Marnell.
It is always a sad day for skateboarding to lose one of its own but even harder when it is such a positive, down to earth and talented skateboarder as Lewis.
Our thoughts go out to his wife, family, friends and all those at Almost and Nike SB.
